New PSP Coming This Fall

Content: Rumors of a major equipment overhaul PSP have repeatedly bubbled to the surface in recent months - some calling for the withdrawal of UMD disc drive, and others pointing to a second analog stick and 'sliding screen. According to sources directly involved in the new system, we learned that Sony will stifle those rumors by unveiling their redesigned PSP at E3 this year's conference in June

Many have speculated that the update would be the PSP 2 or PSP-4000, but our sources, Sony will forgo a digital moniker for a subtitle. We have heard rumors of several code names for the project (including the PSP Slide, Flip PSP and PSP Go!), But since Sony introduced the Go! brand of add-ons (the Go! View video on demand and 1.3 megapixels Go! Cam) for the PSP, it seems likely that the new system will be called the PSP Go! Our sources confirm that this review will be available in two references, with either eight or 16 GB of flash memory. The system is set for release in Japan in September with a United States debut coming in either late October or early November.

Furthermore, since the UMD goes further, Sony has more than 100 classic and new PSP titles available for download at launch (Gran Turismo Mobile is said to one of the first titles to launch). As for the equipment itself, the redesign will include a d-pad analog nub, and the face buttons as part of a unit drag paste below the screen (as seen in our model following above). Unfortunately for those looking for twin-stick shooter controls, the new system will not have a second analog stick, but remain compatible with the control configuration.

When asked about any of these details, Sony, of course, said he "does not comment on rumors or speculation."

As a bit of the reality of speculation, we would not be surprised to see Sony take a number of design features from their handheld Mylo 2 Internet, which is apparently dead in the water. This could provide a touch screen of 800x480 pixels for the system, and a camera on the back of the system.

Between overhaul and a range of PSP titles announced recently (see: Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny), Sony is clearly trying to assert their relevance in the wake of the ISD of the release and success of 'iPhone as a gaming platform. It will be interesting to see what Sony is a key and the reaction to new hardware when it receives its debut at E3, which is only a month. Preloading each PSP Go! with a copy of LittleBigPlanet would certainly make some waves.
