More PSP Games on PSN

The PSP may not have lived up to its potential as the next “it toy,” but “Resistance: Retribution” hints at what this machine could and should have been for gamers. I love my PSP, but even the most diehard Sony nut would admit that the low flow of games for the handheld has been downright depressing lately. “Resistance: Retribution” is a fantastic release that makes you wonder why there aren’t more like it.
The digital distribution of games has become somewhat of the "norm" with most gaming systems these days. There are some games for PSP on the PSN for download, but not a lot. Sony's Playstation marketing head John Koller spoke out about how they are looking to ramp up the amount of content on the PSP store for you PSP owners out there.

Koller mentioned they will start ramping this up in the back half of this year. Why the back half? "Much of it has to do with the development cycle. A lot of the big games that we announced at Destination PlayStation a few weeks ago had UMD (versions) that will be launching in the second half of the year. And marrying those launches with the digital versions of those launches obviously makes development sense. We're looking at a wide range of content throughout the year, but the back half will be heavier than the first." said Koller.

It was indicated that they wanted to distribute PSP games simultaneously as a digital download and in UMD format. It looks as if they are getting ready to phase out the UMD and get people used to downloading their games? Koller talked about how they are going to be increasing the amount of PSone titles on the Playstation network as well.

When asked about the rumored PSP2 without the UMD drive, Koller said, "I can't really comment on that other than to reiterate the fact that the digital side of things for us on PSP is really important. With the PSP-3000, it's a product that can either download content or use UMD. And I think that showcases our view of the content world over the next few years. PSP is a high-margin platform for us. And we look at the big rush of software that's coming as driving a lot of business. Whether it's sales on UMD or digital, we're happy with both."
