Sorry, Custom Firmware is the only way to use emulators and such. But honestly the newest CFW is pretty safe, and even if you brick your psp (very unlikely) you can unbrick it very easily. I say get CFW, you won't regret it.
Whenever I find any cool PSP apps and emulators, I have to use custom firmware, but that crap can screw up my psp.
